Science Tutoring Centers (STC): New Name, New Formula for Success

By Jefferson Huddle

There are countless benefits for tutoring and seeking help early in the fall semester and with the opening of the Science Tutoring Centers (STC), your path to success can take shape. Starting Tuesday, September 6, Old Dominion University's STC will open for any student seeking help with specific courses and content in the College of Sciences. The STC can become any Monarch's "Formula for Success."

The new STC will offer free tutoring services, supplemental instruction, along with flexible hours to all Monarchs taking sciences classes. Walk-ins are always welcome, as well as appointments which are available both online and in-person. Options for these appointments will differ for each of the centers. Hours vary for each tutoring center ranging from as early as 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Sundays through Fridays (in-person or online).

"I am so excited about the Science Tutoring Centers (STC)," said Andrea Stephen, manager of science academic support services and the STC. "Getting help early can serve as a boost to students' GPAs for courses that they may be having difficulty in so don't wait until you are failing the course to seek help from the STC." Stephen and her STC staff regularly check their stcinfo@odu.edu email and have prepared for the opening of the new center. There will be giveaways and prizes to students who come to the STC during the first week of opening.

There are nine different tutoring centers across the campus that are under the umbrella of the STC. These include:

  • Biological Sciences & Psychology Tutoring Center tutoring located in the Perry Library Learning Commons room 1312.
  • Chemistry Success Center located in the New Chemistry Building room 1006.
  • Computer Science tutoring in the Computer Science Undergraduate Resource Center located in Dragas room 1102.
  • Mathematics & Statistics Tutoring is located in the Visual Arts Building (VAB) in the following rooms:
  • (Applied Calculus Lab, Room 1008)
  • (Calculus Lab, Room 2016)
  • (ODU Smart Room 1011)
  • (STAT Lab, Room 1010)
  • Ocean & Earth Sciences and the Physics Learning Center located in OCNPS room 214.

The STC has been designed with Monarchs in mind. The centers are available for students to seek help in a relaxed and supportive environment. The STC aims to break down barriers for students to receive assistance by opening communication between faculty and students. Kick off your fall semester on the right foot and head to one of the STC locations beginning Tuesday, September 6!
