Old Dominion University is committed to equitable compensation practices. As part of this commitment, an annual salary equity review is conducted to identify and address potential inequities in the salaries of faculty and administrators. This review specifically examines differences in salary that may be impacted by ethnicity and gender. Adjustments made through this process are for equity-related concerns only and do not address issues related to merit-based pay, market adjustments, or salary compression, although these factors may contribute to salary differences.

Cases for review are identified by the Office of Institutional Equity & Diversity and Macon and Joan Brock Human Resources, as well as by various university groups, including the Asian Caucus, the Association of University Administrators, the Coalition of Black Faculty and Administrators, the Hispanic/Latino Employee Association, and the Women’s Caucus. Employees may also self-identify for review.

If you believe that your salary may be negatively impacted due to ethnicity or gender, you may submit a self-identification request. To do so, please complete the self-identification form or access it on the Institutional Equity & Diversity webpage for Salary Equity. Your submission must include a detailed rationale explaining why you believe your compensation has been adversely affected by ethnicity or gender. Supporting evidence or specific examples should be provided to strengthen your request. Please note that general concerns about salary, market competitiveness, or compression do not fall within the scope of this review.

When cases are reviewed by Deans and Vice Presidents, they will not be informed of how a request was initiated. Once a recommendation or justification has been provided by the relevant Dean or Vice President, the Office of Institutional Equity & Diversity will assess the response in conjunction with all relevant data. If necessary, additional clarification or supporting information will be requested to ensure a thorough and fair evaluation.

For your convenience, the Office of Institutional Equity & Diversity will be hosting three informational sessions to provide an overview of the review process and address any questions. We encourage faculty and administrators to attend if they would like to learn more. There is one more session next week. Please register in advance for a session.
