ODU hosts Dungy Leadership Institute

Old Dominion University hosted the 2019 NASPA Dungy Leadership Institute (DLI) in June.

DLI is a six-day leadership development program for undergraduates who are aspiring to become student affairs professionals. The institute allowed 32 undergraduate Fellows from around the country to meet at ODU for the opportunity to develop their leadership skills, enhance their cultural competencies and prepare for a future in student affairs.

DLI is held annually on various college campuses and gives Fellows an opportunity to network with peers and student affairs administrators.

DLI participants were housed on campus at ODU and were able to learn directly from DLI faculty and ODU staff. This year's DLI program also included a visit by NASPA President Kevin Kruger, a campus visit to Norfolk State University and an event at Norfolk's historic Attucks Theatre.

"My DLI experience was absolutely fulfilling professionally and personally," said Johnny Young, associate vice president for Student Engagement and Enrollment Services (SEES) at ODU. "It confirmed - not that I needed confirmation - why I have remained in student affairs for over 25 years."

Young noted that Don Stansberry, dean of students and associate vice president of SEES, has been a leader in the NASPA Undergraduate Fellows Program (NUFP), which spawned DLI.

"It was only fitting that ODU serve as one of the host institutions to engage future student affairs leaders from across the nation," Young said.
