A Statement from the President Broderick
February 03, 2019
Dear Monarch Community:
Yesterday I greeted 1,000 visitors to Old Dominion University's open house--normally a joyous occasion--with a heavy heart. Like many others in the audience and throughout the Commonwealth, I was shocked, saddened and angered by the recent revelations of Gov. Ralph Northam's 1984 EVMS yearbook page.
Regardless of the circumstances of how the picture became part of his page, we denounce in the strongest terms what it represents.
I told our guests we vigorously oppose racism and all of its manifestations. This University is committed to diversity and inclusion and we stand against any demonstrations of bigotry.
As we commemorate Black History Month, let us use this troubling moment as a catalyst to work even harder to create a welcoming environment, respectful of others, both at Old Dominion and throughout the Commonwealth.
Sincerely, John R. Broderick
President
