In the coming weeks, state employees throughout Virginia will have an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of others by contributing to the Commonwealth of Virginia Campaign (CVC).
This theme of this year's campaign is "Virginia is for Givers." The annual charity drive, operated for and by state employees, includes 995 trusted charities in need of support. Last year, the university community topped its $80,000 goal when 361 employees donated $80,472 to 67 charities.
This year's goal is $90,000. Leaders for the Old Dominion portion of the effort are hopeful that the campus community will once again help the University remain a top giver among state agencies in southeastern Virginia.
"In keeping with the Monarch tradition of generosity and community building, I encourage you to participate in this worthy initiative, which strengthens our Commonwealth," Old Dominion President John R. Broderick said.
In response to feedback from donors, a newly designed website introduces "ePledge," which offers the ease of secure online giving by credit card or payroll deduction.
"Doing away with paper copies was something that was important to people," said Karen Meier, assistant vice president for community engagement, who chairs the campaign. "This streamlined, paperless process makes giving more efficient, more private and much easier for everyone. Donating on paper is still available to those without online access."
Weekly incentives include everything from tickets to ODU athletic events and ODU-branded merchandise, to a grand prize of two passes to the University Suite with President Broderick when the Monarchs host the Charlotte 49ers on Nov. 30.
"The sooner employees make a pledge, the greater their chances of winning because their names will remain eligible for weekly drawings throughout the campaign," Meier said.
The campaign ends Dec. 20. The payroll deduction deadline is Dec. 13. When employees give to the CVC, 100% percent of designations go directly to the charity they choose.
