Bela Fleck Bassist Victor Wooten to Lead Music Clinic
September 11, 2017
Five time Grammy Award winner and bass guitar legend Victor Wooten, a founding member of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, will present a clinic on Sept. 20 at Old Dominion University in the Chandler Recital Hall, Diehn Fine and Performing Arts Center.
The clinic is free and open to the public.
Wooten, who graduated from Denbigh High School, in Newport News, got his start performing in the 1980s at Busch Gardens with his brothers. The group soon became a star attraction, and was sent overseas to perform as part of the Busch Gardens USO tour.
Wooten later moved to Nashville to pursue a music career, leading to his involvement as a founding member of the group Bela Fleck and the Flecktones that is known for blending jazz and bluegrass. He is widely recognized for work with that group, as well as producing significant and award winning solo projects.
During his career, Wooten has performed and recorded with top-level musicians, including Chick Corea and Bruce Hornsby. He also formed the super group SMV featuring fellow bassists Stanley Clarke and Marcus Miller.
While in Hampton Roads, Wooten will also appear in concert with the Virginia Symphony Orchestra, which is sponsoring the work shop in collaboration with Old Dominion University.
