Old Dominion University's Darden College of Education is hosting a free event on education issues, opportunity and civil rights in the 21st century with nationally-recognized speaker, Pedro Noguera.
The event will be held Monday, Sept. 25 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Ted Constant Convocation Center. The event will be followed with a Q&A session. Tickets and registration is required. To register visit the event's website.
Noguera is the Distinguished Professor of Education at the Graduate School of Education and Information Studies at UCLA. His research focuses on the ways in which schools are influenced by social and economic conditions, as well as by demographic trends in local, regional and global contexts. He is the author of 12 books and over 250 articles and reports.
Jane Bray, dean of the Darden College of Education added: "It is a delight to celebrate the beginning of an academic year with a lecture from Dr. Pedro Noguera, a national expert on school reform, diversity and the achievement gap. We are looking forward to hearing about the ways in which schools are influenced by social and economic conditions and how educators and administrators can work to improve student achievement in the Hampton Roads region."
The presentation will highlight the current reform agenda being promoted by states, the federal government and various advocacy groups. There will also be a discussion about why issues pertaining to racial segregation, poverty and social inequality are no longer considered central to school change as well as possibilities for change that exist in the current period given the constraints confronting public schools.
Noguera also serves on the boards of numerous national and local organizations and appears as a regular commentator on educational issues on CNN, MSNBC, National Public Radio and other national news outlets. His editorials have appeared in the NY Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, Huffington Post and the Dallas Morning News.
Prior to joining the faculty at UCLA, Noguera served as a professor and holder of endowed chairs at New York University, Harvard University and the University of California, Berkeley. From 2009 to 2012, he served as a trustee for the State University of New York (SUNY) as an appointee of the governor. In 2014, he was elected to the National Academy of Education.
