President Broderick Receives Trailblazer Award from Men for Hope

Old Dominion President John R. Broderick, along with several other community leaders and entrepreneurs, recently received the Trailblazer Award from Men for Hope, an organization supporting underserved men through mentorship, education, financial literacy and self- fulfillment.
Awards were given as part of the Men for Hope Trailblazer Awards Gala which was held at the Norfolk Waterside Marriott on Sept. 15.
Other honoree recipients included:
- Kenneth Alexander, ODU alumnus and Mayor of Norfolk, Virginia;
- Hamilton Perkins, ODU alumnus and bag designer who is the founder of the Hamilton Perkins Collection;
- L.D. Britt, the Henry Ford Professor and Edward J. Brickhouse chairman of the Department of Surgery at Eastern Virginia Medical School;
- John Hewitt, the former Liberty Tax Service founder and co-founder of Jackson Hewitt Tax Service Inc.;
- Dwight Schaubach, Longtime ODU supporter, former ODU Education Foundation board member; owner and chairman of the board for Bay Disposal and Recycling Inc.;
- Gilbert Bland, former member of the ODU Board of Visitors and the Health Neighborhood Enterprises, Inc. board president
- Bishop Kim Brown, from Mount Lebanon Baptist Church;
- Hugh Copeland, founder and artistic director of Norfolk's Hurrah Players Family Theatre Company and performing arts academy; and
- Bruce Smith, former NFL defensive end for the Buffalo Bills and the Washington Redskins.
The Men for Hope Trailblazer Awards are intended to recognize "pioneers, innovators, and leaders in Hampton Roads for their countless contributions to the community," according to the organization.
