ODU Researcher Named to European Academy of Sciences

Li Da Xu, an Eminent Scholar and professor of Information Technology at Old Dominion University was recently selected as a foreign fellow of the European Academy of Sciences (EURASC), in the field of engineering science.

In a letter to Xu, Alain Tressaud, the president of EURASC, informed him that all members of the General Board "enthusiastically" supported his nomination in the international organization that includes in its membership 48 Nobel Prize winners, 13 Fields Medal winners, three Abel Prize winners, and 9 Wolf Prize winners.

According to the organization, EURASC is a fully independent international association of distinguished scholars that aims to recognize and elect to its membership the best European scientists with a vision for Europe as a whole, transcending national borders and with the intent of strengthening European science and scientific cooperation and utilizing the expertise of its members in advising other European bodies for the betterment of European research, technological application and social development. It is completely independent of any national entity, in its membership, election processes, deliberations and actions. It thus aims to play a role complementary to those of the national academies and EASAC (the European Academies' Science Advisory Council).

Xu said the selection was a surprise.

"I am honored that I was elected as a member of European Academy of Sciences, and my research recognized by this prestigious academy," Xu said. "My feeling on such an occasion is gratitude to my European colleagues and this distinguished group of scientists in the European Union, who have provided inspiration and support. "I am grateful for the light it shines on the work done here at ODU to continue to define the cutting edge, as well as for the honor it brings to our university."

Currently, Xu's main research field is industrial integrated information systems. Which is also referred to as enterprise systems, enterprise information systems or enterprise resource planning. He is the founding chair of the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP), TC8 WG8.9 and the founding chair of the IEEE SMC Society Technical Committee on Enterprise Information Systems.

Xu has made contributions in initiating the IFIP and IEEE efforts regarding the research and practice of industrial integrated information systems. In addition, he pioneered the development of a new interdisciplinary subject called Industrial Information Integration Engineering, which is a cornerstone of Industry 4.0 that was launched in Germany. Xu said Industry 4.0 represents the tenants of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. His IEEE Fellow citation is for the contribution to the theory and applications of enterprise information systems (in which the core idea is Industrial Information Integration). In a report entitled "2016 Research Frontiers" released by Clarivate Analytics (formerly Thomson Reuters IP & Science) and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Xu's name was mentioned twice due to his pioneering contribution in frontiers research of the Internet of Things and related engineering applications.

In addition to his research endeavors, Xu's peers have recognized his contributions and bestowed numerous awards, including a gold medal from the Russian Academy of Engineering for outstanding contributions in industrial integrated information systems and related large projects. Due to the foundational nature of his work, many well-known scholars have cited his work in their seminal research, including Qian Xuesen.

Xu is the founding editor-in-chief of the "Journal of Industrial Information Integration" and "Enterprise Information Systems." In addition to these numerous achievements, he is an IEEE Fellow, an academician of the Russian Academy of Engineering (formerly Engineering Academy of USSR), and a highly cited researcher in the field of engineering designated by Clarivate Analytics.
