Governor Orders Virginia Flags Lowered to Half-Staff
August 18, 2017
Gov. Terry McAuliffe has ordered that the state flag be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Aug. 18, 2017 at all state and local buildings and grounds in the Commonwealth of Virginia in respect and memory of Virginia State Police Trooper-Pilot Berke M.M. Bates, of New Kent County, Virginia.
Bates and state police Lt. H. Jay Cullen were flying over Charlottesville Aug. 12, keeping watch on protests there that turned violent, when the helicopter they were in crashed.
