President Broderick Ranked in Top 5 of Inside Business Power List

Old Dominion President John R. Broderick's ranking on the Inside Business Power List was elevated to No. 4 this year in acknowledgement of the University's growth.
The Hampton Roads business journal's annual listing ranks and profiles dozens of the region's most influential leaders.
The article notes that, under President Broderick's tenure, the University has "substantially expanded its academic programs and campus facilities" to include more than 24,300 undergraduate and graduate students and about 1,500 full and part-time faculty members with an economic impact for the region of more than $2.6 billion.
"The growth has elevated Broderick into the Power List's top five," the article stated. President Broderick was listed as No. 7 in the 2016 edition.
Under his leadership since 2008, Old Dominion has emerged as an innovative research powerhouse in fields from cybersecurity to bioelectrics. The establishment of the Center for the Study of Sea Level Rise elevated Old Dominion to the top tier in addressing one of the most pressing environmental and economic dilemmas in Hampton Roads - and the world. Illustrating the University's belief in the value of collaboration, Old Dominion recently opened the Commonwealth Center for Recurrent Flooding Resiliency, a joint effort with the College of William and Mary and the college's Virginia Institute of Marine Science to expand research.
President Broderick has presided over an increase in public and private funding to the University. During his tenure, Old Dominion has received more than $660 million in new resources. From 2010 to 2017, the value of the University's endowment rose nearly 50 percent to $214 million.
In an interview with Inside Business, President Broderick cited the cultivation of entrepreneurship and the commercialization of inventions created by faculty, staff and students as sources of pride. He also noted the $35 million donation - the largest in the University's history - from Dick and Carolyn Berry for the construction of the Barry Art Museum, which is scheduled to open in fall 2018.
Other University initiatives President Broderick touched on in the interview include cybersecurity, modeling and simulation and a partnership with George Mason University that launched the Online Virginia Educational Network that has a goal of helping Virginians complete undergraduate degrees.
