Spirited ODU Students Make Ice Cream and Cake-Themed Pitch to Al Roker

By Brendan O'Hallarn

"Hey Al Roker, this is Rachael Edmonds at Old Dominion University in historic Norfolk, Virginia."

Old Dominion's Student Government Association president stood Feb. 21 with fellow SGA executive Noah Butler on the steps of the University's Webb Center. In a brief speech to the crowd - and, more important, the camera filming the event - Edmonds and Butler told long-time NBC television personality Al Roker about one of Old Dominion's spirit traditions.

In an event dubbed "Rokerthon 2017," the jovial weatherman is traveling coast to coast to do forecasts for the Today show from college campuses. As part of Rokerthon 2017, campuses are being challenged to try to break Guinness World Records when Roker visits.

In a video designed to lure Roker to Old Dominion, a crowd of more than 200 Monarchs performed the University's noted Ice Cream and Cake spirit dance. They promised to try to set the first world record for largest-ever simultaneous Ice Cream and Cake dance.

"We'd love to invite you to campus to do Ice Cream and Cake with us," Butler said, before the crowd gyrated to the choreographed movements of the dance, performed to the upbeat hip-hop song by the Buckwheat Boyz.

Ice Cream and Cake has been performed during timeouts at Old Dominion basketball games for more than a decade, and the tradition has spread to football. The ODU student section performs Ice Cream and Cake between the third and fourth quarters of home games.

After recording the video, the students who showed their spirit on the cool, cloudy day shared a treat of - what else? - ice cream and cake.

Old Dominion's SGA is expected to hear shortly if Rokerthon 2017 will visit the University. For more information about Roker's campaign, see the Rokerthon 2017 website.
