VIDEO: Relive Homecoming 2017 in Pictures

Old Dominion's annual homecoming tradition culminated Saturday with the Monarch football team's 6-0 victory over the UNC Charlotte 49ers — the first shut out in the University's history.

But even before the win at Foreman Field at S.B. Ballard stadium there was much to celebrate. A week of festive events led up to the big weekend, which also included a popular homecoming parade.

On Saturday morning, two events were also held — in addition to a slate of more traditional tailgating-type activities — that are of note.

On behalf of the Lambda Chi Alpha-Sigma Iota alumni association, and the family of Kyle Middleton ('07), a memorial bench was dedicated at Whitehurst Beach, where the former student liked to relax while living on campus. Through the bench donation and endowment pledges, the group raised $30,000 this fall in the name of Middleton who was killed in action in 2010 while serving in the U.S. Army in Afghanistan.

During a second event, a group of 20 alumnae established a scholarship endowment, presenting President John R. Broderick with a symbolic check for $100,000. Once fully funded, the "Friends of the Violet Endowment" will be awarded to a current freshman, sophomore or junior in need of financial tuition assistance.
