ODU's Academic Deans to Deliver State of the College Addresses

By Brendan O'Hallarn

Old Dominion University's seven academic deans will launch the 2015-16 academic year later this month, with their annual State of the College addresses.

It is a tradition at the University for the academic leaders of each college to speak about their priorities for the year in the days after President John R. Broderick delivers his State of the University address. President Broderick will deliver his State of the University at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 24 at ODU's Ted Constant Convocation Center.

For Austin O. Agho, who started June 1 as the University's provost and vice president for academic affairs, it will be his first round of State of the College addresses.

"It is nice to see that academic deans have embraced the annual State of the College address as an important tradition at ODU. I anticipate that deans will use the forum to highlight accomplishments and outline their priorities. I am looking forward to hearing directly from the deans what their focus is for this new school year," Agho said.

This year's State of the College addresses are noteworthy because, for the first time, the majority are being delivered by female deans.

Stephanie G. Adams, hired this year as Old Dominion's seventh dean of the Frank Batten College of Engineering and Technology, will deliver her first State of the College address Monday, Aug. 29, at 12 p.m. in the auditorium of the E.V. Williams Engineering and Computational Sciences Building.

Dana Heller, serving as interim dean of the College of Arts and Letters, will deliver her State of the College address on Wednesday, Aug. 24 at 1:30 p.m. in the Batten Arts and Letters (BAL) building, room 1012.

Jane Bray, dean of the Darden College of Education, will deliver her State of the College at 10 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 26 in BAL 1012, with a reception immediately following in the lobby of the Education Building.

Shelley Mishoe, dean of the College of Health Sciences, will deliver her State of the College address Wednesday, Aug. 31 at 11 a.m. in the Big Blue Room of the Ted Constant Convocation Center.

Dean Jeff Tanner will outline his blueprint for the Strome College of Business on Friday, Aug. 26 at 1 p.m. in Constant Hall room 1002.

Chris Platsoucas, dean of the College of Sciences, will deliver his State of the College address on Tuesday, Aug. 30 at noon in the Hampton/Newport News Room of Webb University Center.

Jim Shaeffer, founding dean of the College of Continuing Education and Professional Development, will deliver his State of the College address on Tuesday, Aug. 23 at 1 p.m. in Gornto room 201.

Every State of the College address is open for anyone in the University community to attend. However, seating is limited in each venue, so attendees are urged to arrive early for each address.
