Sandi Phillips, of the Strome College of Business, is the May Employee of the Month

Sandi Phillips, the assistant program manager with the Master of Business Administration program in the Strome College of Business, is Old Dominion University's Employee of the Month for May.

Phillips has been employed by the University since 1998 and was originally hired as a program support technician. Phillips is being recognized for going above and beyond her duties on a regular basis, accepting new challenges, establishing excellent relationships with students, and doing it all with a positive attitude.

Phillips has cultivated relationships with alumni over the years, contributing largely to the Master of Business Administration program being ranked 69th on Bloomberg Business Week's survey of part-time MBA programs. Phillips worked closely with Alumni Services and Shanna Wood to enhance alumni outreach efforts to attain the required response to participate in the survey.

Recently Phillips played an integral role in ensuring that the annual MBA Association Dinner was a success.

"She worked tirelessly with our MBA team, the MBA students, Alumni services, business development, Strome dean's office (including fiscal tech), University procurement, etc. to pull together a professional event and enjoyable evening for all," Wood said. "Truly, the event would have been a disaster without Sandi's interventions."

DETAILS ABOUT THE EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH PROCESS

The University Employee of the Month Selection Committee encourages employees to nominate their outstanding, "go the extra mile" colleagues and employees. This program is designed to acknowledge and reward employees whose accomplishments and/or demeanor exemplify excellence, quality service and commitment to ODU. Classified and AP faculty employees receive a framed certificate from the president, $175 and one day of leave. Hourly winners get $250, since they are not eligible to receive recognition leave.

Note: The selection committee needs specific examples that relate to each applicable criterion in order to select a nominee for the award. Nominations remain active for six months from date of submission and nominators may submit additional documentation to support a nominee during the active six months.

The criteria used to nominate an employee include the following:

  • An outstanding accomplishment that benefited the department/students.
  • Extraordinary service to internal and/or external customers.
  • Inspiring initiative/leadership.
  • Enthusiasm/energy given to assigned work.
  • Teamwork.
  • Exemplary efforts to nurture a climate of care, concern and civility.
  • Creative innovations to service, process or work tools.
