Impactful Study by ODU M&S Engineers Lauded by Top Journal

Old Dominion has a track record of excellence in the discipline of modeling and simulation, stretching back to the 1990s, when the University formed many local partnerships with its brand new Virginia Modeling, Analysis and Simulation Center (VMASC).
Old Dominion graduated the world's first Ph.D. student in the discipline (current VMASC executive director John Sokolowski) and has forged research expertise stretching from emergency preparedness to health care to advanced manufacturing.
While the funding and research partners have changed (a major collaborator, U.S. Joint Forces Command in Suffolk, faced a significant budget cut five years ago), one constant has remained -- the University's commitment to groundbreaking research in this still-maturing discipline.
Tangible proof comes from the most recent edition of the "Journal of Simulation," based in Europe. For its 10th edition (the twice-yearly journal was first published in 2006), editors selected among its list of most influential publications a study titled "Reference modelling in support of M&S-foundations and applications," which was written by three Old Dominion researchers.
Andreas Tolk, former professor of engineering management in Old Dominion's Frank Batten College of Engineering and Technology; and Saikou Diallo and Jose Padilla, research assistant professors at VMASC, are lead authors of the paper, which develops a framework to link systems engineering and modeling and simulation processes.
"This recognition attests to the important work that VMASC is doing in support of modeling and simulation on an international level," Sokolowski said.
