20-year old Prodigy Ty Hobson-Powell Joins ODU Thursday for Lecture on Poverty

Ty Hobson-Powell, who travels extensively giving lectures on global issues, will visit Old Dominion University as part of his "Ty Talks" national collegiate speaking tour.

The Feb. 25 lecture, "Poverty: The Root of all Evil," will take place at 7 p.m. in the Mills Godwin Building, room 101. The event is free and open to the public.

Hobson-Powell is a 20-year-old prodigy pursuing his Ph.D. in global affairs at Rutgers University-Newark. He earned bachelor's degrees from the University of Baltimore in psychology, history, government and public policy at the age of 15 and a master's in human services from Liberty University at 17.

The Washington, D.C. native has attended five colleges in the past seven years with a goal of helping to shape the next generation.

The Eta Omega chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity (one of the oldest historically black fraternities on campus) is hosting the event in conjunction with Black History Month. The Eta Omega chapter is celebrating 41 years of achievement at Old Dominion.

Hobson-Powell became the youngest member to join Kappa Alpha Psi at the age of 16 while attending North Carolina Central University Law School.

This event is co-sponsored by the ODU chapter of the NAACP. More information on the event can be received by contacting Kam Nedd at knedd001@odu.edu or by calling 808-722-1496.
