ODU's Student Public Relations Chapter Grows Strongly

Old Dominion President John R. Broderick presented certificates to new members of Old Dominion University's chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) at a Dec. 1 reception.

ODU's PRSSA chapter swelled to 29 members. During the lunch that followed, PRSSA board members Sara Hunter and Taylor Simmons gave a brief presentation on the group's trip to the PRSSA national conference in Indianapolis in October.

"President Broderick made remarks at the luncheon, and talked about how important communication skills are in life. And he commended PRSSA, adding that he didn't know what a thriving chapter we had on campus," said Carol Branch, lecturer of communication and club adviser. Broderick's professional background is in journalism and public relations.

The luncheon was also attended by Stephen Pullen, chair of the Department of Communication and Theatre Arts; Burton Saint John, associate professor of communication; and Christine Brantley of the Virginia Beach Public Library, PRSA Hampton Roads president.

The Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) is the foremost organization for students interested in public relations and communications. The organization seeks to advance the public relations profession by nurturing generations of future professionals, advocating for rigorous academic standards for public relations education, the highest ethical principles and diversity in the profession.

PRSSA is made up of more than 11,000 students and advisers organized into 300 plus Chapters in the United States, Argentina, Colombia and Peru.

The student organization has a tradition of strong support from its parent organization, the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA), which offers professional development, networking opportunities and news.
