Weather Alert: Hurricane Matthew-related Campus Information

As of this morning, Wednesday, Oct. 5, the latest projected track for Hurricane Matthew has shifted slightly to the west and up the Florida coastline. The storm is then expected to push off to sea after reaching the coast of the Carolinas.

While the overall forecast for Southeast Virginia now looks more favorable, the Hampton Roads region is still within the storm's cone of uncertainty and projections could change. The University's administration is closely monitoring Hurricane Matthew to ensure the safety and well-being of all students, faculty and staff. If weather conditions change, updates will be communicated on the Old Dominion University website.

The University's fall semester break is October 8 - 11, Saturday through next Tuesday. There are no classes scheduled during this time, which provides on-campus residents time to weather the storm at home with friends and family. Friday classes will be held as scheduled.

Although not recommended, if students choose to stay on campus this weekend, precautions should be taken. Due to the possibility of tidal flooding, vehicles parked on campus this weekend should be relocated to Garage B (on 43rd Street, adjacent to Perry Library), or C and D (the garages on either side of the Ted Constant Convocation Center), starting Friday. Vehicles may be parked in those lots until Wednesday at 7 a.m.

The campus community is strongly encouraged to monitor local television stations WTKR-TV 3, WAVY-TV 10, and WVEC-TV 13 for up-to-the-minute weather information. Road conditions this weekend could deteriorate depending on the final track of the storm, so caution is recommended when traveling.

Due to the possibility of storm-related inclement weather this weekend, the planned football game between ODU and the University of Massachusetts has been rescheduled to Friday evening, Oct. 7 with an 8 p.m. kickoff time.

The game will be broadcast on the ODU Sports Radio Network with coverage beginning at 7 p.m. Friday. The game will be televised via Conference USA TV beginning at 8 p.m. Friday.

Tailgate lots, and Kaufmann Mall, will open Friday at 5:30 p.m. for pre-game activities. All parking lots and garages that normally close at 5 a.m. Saturday, will now close promptly at 5 p.m. Friday.

Three parking garages will be available all day Friday and throughout the weekend. If you plan to be on campus after 5 p.m. Friday, please park in one of these locations. Special Monarch Transit shuttles will be provided all day Friday between these garages and campus locations.

  • 43rd Street Garage (Garage B) - adjacent to the Perry Library
  • North Constant Center Garage (Garage D) - between 45th and 46th Streets behind the SpringHill Suites Marriott on the north side of the Ted Constant Center
  • South Constant Center Garage (Garage C) - located between 41st and 43rd Streets on the south side of the Ted Constant Center
