Lifelong Learning Event, Provost's Conversation to be Hosted Jan. 14

The first Lifelong Learning event at Old Dominion University for 2016 addresses the potential for personal growth and life satisfaction of a green thumb.

The event "Art in the Garden: From Pliny to Jefferson" will be hosted Thursday, Jan. 14, from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. in the President's Dining Room of Webb University Center.

Featuring Agnieszka Whelan, lecturer in the Art Department at Old Dominion, Art in the Garden will present a number of famous and not-so-famous gardens preoccupied with the theme of the good life. Whelan, who teaches courses in the history of art at the University, will ask if that ideal is still relevant today and if so, what shape our gardens take to express it.

The event is free and open to the public. Please RSVP by Jan. 11 to http://odu.imodules.com/ATG16, or call 757-683-3116.

Whelan's scholarship specializes in the history of gardens of the Enlightenment, with a particular focus on gardens as sites of performance and visual communication. When is the author of Tour Through England, a book on 18th-century travels, as well as numerous articles about gardens of that era.

Also taking place on Jan. 14:

Sharing ideas across the disciplines: What works? What can be borrowed?

In January's Provost's Conversation on Teaching and Learning, representatives of Educational Foundations and Leadership will share ideas that have helped them to engage their students. They'll discuss planning to teach in both a live and an online environment, they'll share effective and innovative online teaching strategies, and they'll share the idea of collaborative planning.

Jay Scriber, professor, will moderate. Scheduled panelists include: associate professor Karen Sanzo and adjunct assistant professors Darra Belle, Stenette Byrd and Garett Smith.

The discussion will take place on Thursday Jan. 14 at 12:30p.m. in the conference room of the Learning Commons@Perry Library. All are invited to attend.
