ODU Libraries to Extend Hours through Friday, May 8

Old Dominion's University Libraries are expanding hours and services to assist students with end-of-semester research and finals study needs.

Perry Library and Learning Commons @ Perry Library will be open for continuous 24-hour service until closing at 10 p.m. on Friday, May 8. ODU ID card swipe access through the front entrance is required from midnight - 8 a.m. daily.

Increasing support for students in the weeks leading up to and including final exams has been a priority of the libraries since the Learning Commons at Perry Library opened in 2011. Based on feedback received from students, what began in 2012 as around-the-clock service limited to the Learning Commons was expanded to all floors of Perry Library in 2013.

"Keeping Perry Library open is an involved effort that includes coordinating with security, housekeeping, staffing from the Libraries and ITS, Einstein's Bros, and others," said interim university librarian George Fowler." It could not happen without everyone's engagement and focus on the students."

Expanding hours has proved helpful for Old Dominion students. During the weeks around final exams in fall of 2014, more than 68,000 entrances were recorded for Perry Library and the Learning Commons.

The following other enhancements have been made for studying at the University Libraries:

  • Within Perry Library, group study rooms accommodating four to 10 people may be reserved Online. Equipment, including laptops, iPads, graphing calculators and computer cables, is available for checkout at the Learning Commons Help Desk.
  • In response to student requests for improved individual study space, the third floor of Perry Library is designated as a quiet study zone through Friday, May 8.
  • ODU's Student Government Association will sponsor "Exam Jam" in the Learning Commons from 7-11 p.m. on Thursday, April 23. Free testing supplies, food, drinks and a petting zoo are planned.
  • ODU Safe Ride service is available Monday through Sunday, 8 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. When Safe Ride is not in operation, students may call the police non-emergency phone number (683-4000) for ODU Escort Services, or a police escort.

There are additional branch library locations in the Diehn Composers Room and Elise N. Hofheimer Art Library. See HERE for operating hours at those libraries.

For more information about expanded services at the University Libraries, please contact the Learning Commons Help Desk, which is open around the clock, at 757-683-4178, or email learningcommons@odu.edu.
