President Broderick Praises Employees' "Terrific Effort" During Snow Storm

Dear Colleague:

By far, this is the coldest morning in which I have penned a letter to the campus community.

In fact, it is the weather that prompts me to write to you.

The weather-related operating decisions the university makes are based on as much accurate information as we can obtain. We consult with weather services, local governments and school systems, as well as police departments, before deciding on opening or closing.

Approximately 7,000 of our students live within walking distance of campus, but others travel great distances. The same holds true for our employees. This is why our communication encourages employees and students to use their best judgement regarding traveling to the university.

Additionally, we must be conscious of the expectations placed on us by accrediting agencies regarding time spent in the classroom. If you recall, several years ago we had to schedule classes on Saturday due to cancellations. Some of our sister institutions in Virginia are already facing that option. Hopefully, the weather will cooperate for the rest of the semester and we will avoid that fate.

In closing, I want to thank all the people who worked throughout the storm. There were many who braved record-breaking cold weather to clear lots and sidewalks. Others kept us safe, fed us or ensured facilities remained open, such as the Student Recreation Center and the Learning Commons.

It was a terrific effort by so many. For those involved, I offer my thanks on behalf of our 25,000 students and 3,000 employees.

Sincerely,

John R. Broderick

President
