ODU Dance Program to Present Fall Concert Nov. 18-21
November 05, 2015
The Old Dominion University dance program presents its annual University Dance Theatre Fall Concert Nov.18-20 and 21st at the University Theatre.
This concert will include ballroom, jazz, ballet and modern dance choreography by ODU faculty members and selected students. It will also include a piece by guest artist Li Chiao-Ping.
Performances are scheduled for Nov. 18-20 at 8 p.m. and Nov. 21 at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. at the theater on Hampton Boulevard at 47th Street.
Chiao-Ping restaged her nationally recognized work "Gó" with ODU dance students during a five-day residency this fall. The title, "Gó," comes from a Chinese board game that simulates strategy in war. Not unlike warriors, six dancers perform a kind of war dance for modern times. The angst-ridden tutu-clad dancers bourrée their way into a frenzy, leading to even more surprises. Chiao-Ping is the Artistic Director of Li Chiao-Ping Dance based in Madison, Wis., and a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Dance program director Amanda Kinzer contributes a modern dance work entitled "Catalyst" that explores the ways in which humans interact with their environment and the potential consequences of these interactions. This large group dance is set to the dark ambient music of Xenoton.
Professor Marilyn Marloff is presenting two dances: "Bounds," an intense modern dance group work that addresses psychological boundaries; and a new, as yet untitled work that is set in a ballet studio.
Adjunct professor Katie Iacono's untitled new work is an exploration of doing the opposite of what one has always done before. The piece is a trio of contemporary modern movement highlighting three senior performers in the dance program at ODU.
Adjunct professor Sheena Jeffers will premiere a new group work entitled "Eudaimonia," which portrays a divine creative spirit guide entering the body to drive creative production. The piece reveals what it is to be brought to life by inspiration.
Assistant Professor Megan Thompson will premiere a group work in which she uses dancers' bodies like moving topography. Inspired by Edward Burtynsky's photography exhibit "Water," Thompson explores the relationship between humans and water.
The concert also includes new works by adjunct faculty members Danny Charles, Cara Goodwin and various undergraduate students.
Tickets are $12 for Old Dominion University students and $14 for general admission until November 1 and $15 for students and $20 for general admission after November 1. Tickets are available online at www.oduartstix.com, the Arts and Letters Box Office in the University Theater, by phone at 683-5305 and at the door.
