Economics Lecturer Maurice Seaton Dies at 64

Maurice Seaton, a senior lecturer in Old Dominion University's department of economics, died Oct. 21. He was 64.

A native of the Caribbean island of St. Kitts, Seaton became an instructor of economics at ODU in 2007, after previously working as an adjunct. Seaton rose to the rank of senior lecturer in 2014, the same year he was named the University's Male Professor of the Year by the NAACP.

He also served as the faculty advisor to Omicron Delta Epsilon, the international honor society in economics.

"Over his years at ODU, Maurice taught thousands of students," said Christopher Colburn, chair of the department of economics. "He made economics come alive for them. Maurice was enthusiastic and he loved teaching. He will be sorely missed by the economics department, the Strome College of Business and everyone he touched at ODU."

Seaton, a Chesapeake resident, is survived by his wife, Betty Jo Seaton, and one son.

He graduated from North Dakota State University in 1982 with a bachelor's degree in agronomy. Seaton added a master's in agronomy from Virginia Tech in 1984, and later earned a master's in economics from Virginia Tech in 1986.
