On 9/11, Old Dominion University Community Challenged to Serve

With Thursday's 13th anniversary of the attacks of September 11, Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe has called on all Virginians to complete an act of service between September 11 and 28, in honor of the National Day of Service and Remembrance.

Members of the Old Dominion University are encouraged to participate, and have been offered some opportunities to serve.

Ellie's Hats

September 11th - September 28th

Donate a new hat between September 11th and 28th to benefit a child with cancer. Ellie's Hats knows that little things go a long way, and is committed to bringing a little cheer into the lives of children and families as they cope with the realities of cancer and chemotherapy. All hats will go to children in the oncology unit at CHKD.

To participate: Drop off a hat at any of the following collection spots:

  • Office of Community Engagement, 1006 Koch Hall
  • Leadership and Student Involvement, 1071 Webb Center
  • Jim Jarrett Athletic Admin Building, Room 1102

Stop Hunger Now Event

Friday, September 12th

12-2 p.m. , Webb University Center River Rooms

Stop Hunger Now has been fulfilling its commitment to end hunger across the globe for 15 years by coordinating the distribution of food and other life-saving aid to crisis-burdened areas around the world. Join your fellow Monarchs in preparing and packing 10,000 meals to transport anywhere in the world where there is a need.

Walk to End Alzheimer's

Tuesday, September 16th

12 p.m., Kaufman Mall

Everyone has a reason to end Alzheimer's. Join ODU's satellite Walk to End Alzheimer's, an event that unites the entire community in a display of combined strength and dedication in the fight against this devastating disease, the nation's sixth-leading cause of death.

Human Pink Ribbon

Saturday, September 20th

10 a.m.

Foreman Field at S.B. Ballard Stadium

Create a ribbon. Create awareness. Join the Sentara Cancer Network and Optima Health to create a human Pink Promise Ribbon. Help make a local demonstration in the global fight against Breast Cancer!

To participate: Come to Foreman Field in flat shoes at 10 a.m.

Blood Drive

Wednesday, September 24th

10 a.m.-4 p.m., Hampton/Newport News Room

Did you know that one pint of blood can save up to 3 lives?

To participate: Schedule an appointment to donate by visiting www.redcrossblood.org and entering the sponsor code "Monarchs."
