Darden College of Education Recipient of International Pete Taylor Award

The Old Dominion University Darden College of Education was recently recognized by the Military Child Education Coalitions (MCEC) with an international award that recognizes teacher preparation programs that include components specifically focused on military-connected children.

The 2014 recipients of the LTG (Ret)H.G. "Pete" Taylor Partnership of Excellence Award were recently announced by the coalition at their 16th National Training Seminar, in Washington D.C. The annual award recognizes outstanding partnerships formed between military installations and school districts that serve military children.

Award winners are selected from schools and military installations around the world by MCEC, a non-profit organization dedicated to addressing the transition and educational issues affecting military children.

In the higher education category, Old Dominion was selected for the 2014 Exemplary Higher Education Award: Teaching, Education and Advocacy for Military Students (TEAMS) along with its partners, that include: Navy Region Mid-Atlantic, The City of Virginia Beach public school system, Navy School Liaison Officers and the City of Newport News public school system.

The Pete Taylor Partnership of Excellence Award was established in 2004 to recognize the work of former MCEC Chairman Lt. Gen. (Ret.) Pete Taylor.

"MCEC proudly salutes the remarkable difference these schools and military installations are making in the lives of military children," said Mary Keller, executive director of the MCEC. "By partnering in unique and innovative ways, these military and education leaders follow the example set by General Taylor and remind us once again of the impact that we as a community can have on each military child."
