Rutledge, Bailey to appear on 'With Good Reason'

Next week's new episode of "With Good Reason," the public radio program that spotlights the work of Virginia's public universities, will be an all-ODU show.
Carolyn Rutledge, associate professor of nursing in Old Dominion University's College of Health Sciences, is interviewed about the need to graduate nurses at the doctoral level as an innovative solution to America's healthcare problems.
Blake Bailey, ODU professor of English and former Pulitzer Prize finalist, speaks about his dark upbringing as presented in the memoir he recently published, "The Splendid Things We Planned."
This episode of "With Good Reason" airs at 1 p.m. on Thursday, July 24, on WHRV-FM 89.5 in Hampton Roads. Produced by the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities, "With Good Reason" spotlights the achievements of Virginia public universities in scholarly research and innovation on public radio stations across Virginia and around the country. A 2014 recipient of the Outstanding Faculty distinction from the State Council for Higher Education in Virginia, Rutledge has been on the ODU faculty since 2002. She is also a family nurse practitioner and the founding director of ODU's DNP program with a track for advanced practice nurses and nurse executives. In 2011, she received the ODU Doctoral Mentoring Award.
Rutledge has served as an investigator on 22 successful grant applications totaling more than $9.5 million, with a focus on increasing health care to rural and underserved populations. Having grown up in rural Amherst County, Va., she recognizes the need to reach out to patients with limited access to health care. Her approach has been to educate graduate nurses such as nurse practitioners and nurse midwives to meet the needs of such populations.
Bailey has made a critically acclaimed name for himself documenting the often-turbulent lives of literary greats Charles Jackson, John Cheever and Richard Yates.
According to the publisher, Bailey's memoir is "his darkly funny account of growing up in the shadow of an erratic and increasingly dangerous brother, an exhilarating and sometimes harrowing story that culminates in one unforgettable Christmas."
The New York Times review notes that Blake uses "a surprising degree of humor and frankness" in the memoir while describing some of the most humiliating moments of his life.
"With Good Reason" has twice won the Gabriel Award for Best Documentary/Public Affairs Program. It also is the recipient of top honors from the Virginia Association of Broadcasters and won a second-place award in the Public Radio News Directors competition.
