ODU Board of Visitors Adopts Modest Tuition and Fee Increases for 2014-15

At its June 12 meeting, the Old Dominion University Board of Visitors approved a modest increase in tuition and fees that is significantly less than the average approved by Virginia's other doctoral institutions.

The board also approved renaming of ODU's business school to the Strome College of Business and its new entrepreneurial center to the Strome Entrepreneurial Center, in recognition of an $11 million donation by Mark and Tammy Strome to the university in support of a new, multipronged program to nurture business entrepreneurs. See the full story here.

Tuition and fee recommendations approved by the board included a $215 per semester or $430 total annual increase for in-state undergraduate students, a $610 annual increase for in-state graduate students, a $940 annual increase for out-of-state undergraduates and a $994 annual increase for out-of-state graduate students.

"This certainly keeps us competitive and still covers what has to be addressed in terms of providing a quality education," said ODU Rector Fred Whyte.

In other action at Thursday's meeting, the board:

  • Approved the naming of the university's Art Studio Building and Annex as the James A. Hixon Art Studio Building and Annex after the former member and rector of the Old Dominion University Board of Visitors.
  • Appointed Dr. Willy R. Wriggers as professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering with an award of tenure in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering in the College of Engineering and Technology, effective July 25, 2014.
  • Awarded tenure to Dr. Morris W. Foster, as professor of community and environmental health in the College of Health Sciences. Foster will join the university as vice president for research and professor of community and environmental health on July 1, 2014.
