President Broderick Featured as Guest on ‘Thinking Out Loud’

Old Dominion University President John R. Broderick was a featured guest this week on the City of Chesapeake's community access television show, "Thinking Out Loud."

The show, which can be viewed on Cox Cable (channel 48) and Verizon (channel 43), is a news and talk program covering a mix of topics spanning "Chesapeake headlines, current events, politics and loads of personality," according to the program's website.

Show host Mark Cox introduced Broderick in the opening segment as "someone who is leading the charge to bring ODU to greater achievements than ever before."

The pair settled in for a wide-ranging interview that covered the "many exciting things happening on campus."

Discussion topics included:

  • Broderick's recent election as president of the Virginia Space Grant Consortium, a partnership between NASA and the state's higher education institutions that is working to create more STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) opportunities.
  • "The Ballerina," a feature-length psychological thriller that was filmed in March at ODU and on location in Franklin using a mix of students, faculty and film industry professionals. It was written and directed by ODU communication and theatre arts professor Stephen Pullen and was recently featured in a Virginian Pilot article.
  • New construction on campus, including Brock Commons, the Barry Arts Building and a new facility for the Darden College of Education, as well as upcoming projects to build the first freestanding dining hall on campus and a new chemistry/biology building.

"Construction means progress and we're going to look different than we did five years ago, 10 years ago," Broderick said, of the projects. "That's how you evolve."

Broderick also indicated support for expansion of light rail to ODU, telling the host that he hopes ODU and Naval Station Norfolk are added to the planning scenario at some point.
