Shirley Wiggins is November Employee of the Month

Shirley Wiggins, an employee of facilities management since September 1997, is the Old Dominion University November Employee of the Month.

As the Housekeeping Supervisor for six QUAD resident halls, Wiggins has continuously taken the lead on ensuring all areas under her responsibility are comfortable for more than 1,200 student residents. Daily housekeeping efforts under her supervision include 25 hallways, 34 study lounges, 27 community bathrooms, 12 laundry rooms and 16 four-story stairwells as well as the surrounding grounds. In all, her territory covers more than 450,000 square feet.

During the months of May, June, July and August Wiggins' leadership was key in supervising housekeeping staff in cleaning 1,465 spaces for approximately 3,000 people who attended annual summer camps and conferences.

Also over the summer, Wiggins planned and directed the deep cleaning of six QUAD resident halls that include more than 480 suites and bathrooms - an effort that was completed a week ahead of schedule. Wiggins also volunteered to coordinate the in-house training of 27 housekeepers.

DETAILS ABOUT THE EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH PROCESS

The University Employee of the Month Selection Committee encourages employees to nominate their outstanding, "go the extra mile" colleagues and employees. This program is designed to acknowledge and reward employees whose accomplishments and/or demeanor exemplify excellence, quality service and commitment to ODU. Classified and AP faculty employees receive a framed certificate from the president, $175 and one day of leave. Hourly winners get $250, since they are not eligible to receive recognition leave.

Note: The selection committee needs specific examples that relate to each applicable criterion in order to select a nominee for the award. Nominations remain active for six months from date of submission and nominators may submit additional documentation to support a nominee during the active six months.

The criteria used to nominate an employee include the following:

  • An outstanding accomplishment that benefited the department/students.
  • Extraordinary service to internal and/or external customers.
  • Inspiring initiative/leadership.
  • Enthusiasm/energy given to assigned work.
  • Teamwork.
  • Exemplary efforts to nurture a climate of care, concern and civility.
  • Creative innovations to service, process or work tools.
