Arts Panel to Discuss the ‘Norfolk Aesthetic’ at ODU Event

Local artists, critics, curators and educators will discuss the influences and inspirations of Norfolk's various arts scenes during an upcoming colloquium at Old Dominion University.

The ODU College of Arts and Letters' Institute of Humanities will host the public forum on the "Norfolk Aesthetic" to explore whether it is influenced and inspired by the local environment and to what extent can there be something akin to a Norfolk style of art.

This free event will be Friday, Nov. 7, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Baron and Ellin Gordon Galleries in the University Village at 4509 Monarch Way.

Invited panelists for the colloquium include:

  • Teresa Annas, former art critic for The Virginian-Pilot
  • Fred Bayersdorfer, assistant dean for the arts at ODU
  • Linda McGreevy, professor of art history at ODU
  • Karen Rudd, manager of cultural affairs at Selden Arcade
  • John Rudel, curator of exhibitions at Virginia Wesleyan College

In 2007, 375 folk art works were donated to ODU by Baron and Ellin Gordon to showcase self-taught art and its relation to contemporary art. For more information on the galleries, which features work by regional, national and international artists, visit the Baron and Ellin Gordon Galleries website.
