Cybersecurity Expert and Author is Economics Club Guest Speaker

In a generation, the issues of cybersecurity and cyber war have gone from the stuff of science fiction to a real, tangible threat.

With cyberspace a huge part of society's modern way of life for everything from communication to commerce to conflict, the issues of keeping that immense amount of information secure are significant and potentially life-threatening.

Peter W. Singer of the Brookings Institution, this month's Economics Club of Hampton Roads speaker, is the author of "Cybersecurity and CyberWar: What Everyone Needs to Know." In his address Wednesday, Oct. 22, Singer will address key issues in the areas of cyberspace and its security - how it works, why it matters, and how governments and individuals can protect themselves.

The Economics Club, sponsored by Old Dominion University's Strome College of Business, attracts world class speakers in business-related fields to speak to an audience of local business and academic leaders. Singer's address will be held at noon on Sept. 24 at the Norfolk Marriott Waterside.

The event is free for members of the Economics Club of Hampton Roads, and $40 for non-members. For registration, contact Katrina Davenport at kdavenpo@odu.edu or 757-683-5138.

Singer is currently a Strategist at the New American Foundation and is a former Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution, where he was Director of the Center for 21st Century Security and Intelligence. At age 29, Singer became the youngest scholar named a Senior Fellow in the 95-year history of the Brookings Institution. He is considered one of the world's leading experts on changes in 21st century warfare and has written for many of the world's major media and journals, including the Boston Globe, Los Angeles Times, New York Times and Washington Post.

He is also a founder and organizer of the U.S.-Islamic World Forum, a global conference that brings together leaders from across the United States and the Muslim world.

The Economics Club of Hampton Roads is an organization for business and government executives and community leaders who share an interest in the practical implications of economic principles, trends and events. It was established in 1991 as a community service by former ODU President James V. Koch, and is administered by Vinod Agarwal, interim dean of the Strome College of Business, under the supervision of an elected board.
