Bike ODU Program to Be Featured on ‘With Good Reason’

Old Dominion University's innovative bike share program, Bike ODU, will be featured on the public radio show "With Good Reason," to be broadcast around the state next week.

The hour-long show, produced by the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities, will air at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 19, on WHRV-FM 89.5 in Hampton Roads. "With Good Reason" spotlights the achievements of Virginia public universities in scholarly research and innovation.

ODU's Eddie Hill, assistant professor of human movement sciences, and Bridget Nemeth, director of recreation, will be interviewed on the show. They brought the program to the university, which now has a fleet of nearly 50 bicycles available for use free of charge by members of the campus community.

The interview is part of an episode of "With Good Reason" dedicated to "Pedal Power." Also interviewed during the show will be Ralph Buehler, a professor from Virginia Tech who has looked at who is riding bikes and why, and the infrastructure cities need to make cycling safer and more convenient.

Jerry and Stetson Franklin of Danville Community College take listeners on a spin through the world of e-bikes. The electric bicycle, or e-bike, is growing in popularity and has the potential to create jobs.

Under Bike ODU, bicycles can be checked out at no charge by any students, staff or faculty who are members of the Student Recreation Center. The bikes come with a U-lock, helmet and basket, and may be borrowed for up to one week. The bikes are housed at the Outdoor Adventure Program (OAP) and may be checked out during normal business hours. Users also may take advantage of the OAP Bike Shop for free maintenance and parts.

Faculty members are encouraged to join the "With Good Reason" Facebook page, http://www.facebook.com/pages/With-Good-Reason-radio/203141233005, or subscribe to the show's podcast, www.tinyurl.com/wgrpodcast. Audio files of the full program and its companion news feature will be posted Friday to the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities website, at www.virginiahumanities.org.

"With Good Reason" has twice won the Gabriel Award for Best Documentary/Public Affairs Program. It also is the recipient of top honors from the Virginia Association of Broadcasters and won a second-place award in the Public Radio News Directors competition.
