Student Recreation Center to Host Triathlon Nov. 3

Old Dominion University's Student Recreation Center is joining the triathlon craze. The SRC will host the 2nd Annual ODU Triathlon on Sunday, Nov. 3, as part of the Retro Tri Series, a group of 10 events nationwide designed to showcase the history and tradition of the three-sport event.

The event at ODU features a 400-yard "snake" swim in the SRC pool, beginning with the fastest swimmer; a 6-mile bike ride on a partially closed course on Powhatan Avenue; and a 3.1-mile run around the ODU campus. The event is open to anyone age 13 or older. For information about the event at ODU, go to www.odu.edu/recreation. To register, click HERE.

Early-bird entry for the event (until Oct. 1) is $23 for participants with ODU affiliation and $25 for participants from the community. After Oct. 1, the entry fee rises to $27 for participants from ODU and $30 for the general public. Competitors must purchase a $12 USA Triathlon day license with registration, as this is an officially sanctioned, USA Triathlon event. All participants will receive a race shirt and finisher medal.

The race starts at 10 a.m. on Nov. 3, with a 9:30 a.m. race meeting in Parking Lot 49. Participants without bicycles may borrow one from the SRC.

The Retro Tri series, sponsored by USA Triathlon, harks back to the days before triathlons pierced the cultural consciousness. They are an effort to show the history and tradition of the event, which first became widely known through television coverage of the Ironman Triathlon from Hawaii.

One event will take place in each of the 10 USA Triathlon regions across the United States, including the November event at ODU. The Retro Tri Series will serve to expose and continue to educate all participants on a healthy and active multisport lifestyle. It is open to first-timers, seasoned veterans and those looking to stay active, all while in an event atmosphere.

Retro attire is encouraged to enhance the experience and atmosphere.

Participants looking to train for the triathlon can join the Train Like an Athlete program with ODU's Student Recreation Center. Contact Tamara Morgan at tmorgan@odu.edu or 683-4607.
