ODU Hosting Statewide Information Security Conference

ODU's VMASC will host the VA SCAN 2013 conference
Old Dominion University will host a statewide information security conference Oct. 3-4 at its Virginia Modeling, Analysis and Simulation Center (VMASC) in Suffolk.
The Virginia Alliance for Secure Computing and Networking (VA SCAN) 2013 conference, co-hosted by VMASC and ODU's Office of Information Technology Services (ITS), will feature a keynote address by retired Navy Rear Adm. Edward H. Deets III, director of the Software Solutions Division at Carnegie Mellon University's Software Engineering Institute.
The conference theme, "Securing the Infrastructure," is in recognition of the increasing complexity of networks, which now act as host for a variety of critical services - from police services, to sensors, to building controls, as well as ever-increasing amounts of sensitive data.
"As the services change on our networks, security considerations must change to meet the changing landscape," said conference chairman Doug Streit, director of information security at ODU.
"This conference will emphasize these changes to our networks, the growing service impact of network unavailability, evolution of assessing risks and other topics relative to maintaining a secure infrastructure."
Deets served 30 years in the U.S. Navy prior to beginning work at Carnegie Mellon. In his final military service appointment he was the commander of Naval Network Warfare Command, where he oversaw Navy network, space, communications, cryptologic, signals intelligence and cyber operations. He is a graduate of Duke University and the National War College and was commissioned through the Duke NROTC program.
Other presenters at the conference include VMASC chief scientist Barry Ezell; Mary Dunker, director of Secure Enterprise Technologies at Virginia Tech; and Jim Jokl, chief enterprise architect at the University of Virginia.
Other ODU presenters include IT audit manager Glenn Wilson, and Rick Lovelace, assistant director of converging technologies.
VA SCAN exists for the purpose of strengthening information technology security programs within the commonwealth of Virginia. Attending the Oct. 3-4 conference will be IT managers, IT security professionals, technical staff and auditors from higher education, K-12, government and law enforcement.
