Retired CIA Adviser Bruce Riedel to Discuss ‘Avoiding Armageddon’ at ODU Lecture Monday

Bruce Riedel, director of the Intelligence Project at the Brookings Institution, and one of the foremost experts on U.S. national security, will be at Old Dominion University Monday to discuss the critical nexus between the United States, India and Pakistan.

Riedel's lecture, "Avoiding Armageddon: America, India and Pakistan to the Brink and Back," will be presented at 5 p.m. in the Batten Arts and Letters Building, Room 1012, on ODU's Norfolk campus.

It is free and open to the public. Free parking will be provided on the top level of Garage B, located at the corner of 43rd Street and Bluestone Avenue, near Perry Library.

Attendees can expect a stimulating discussion that will provide unique insight into some of the most complicated national security issues the United States faces today. ODU's Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, Department of Political Science and Geography and Graduate Program in International Studies are joint sponsors of the lecture.

Riedel retired from the Central Intelligence Agency in 2006 after 30 years of service that included postings overseas. He was a senior adviser on South Asia and the Middle East to the last four U.S. presidents, working on the staff of the National Security Council at the White House. Riedel also served as deputy assistant secretary of defense for the Near East and South Asia at the Pentagon and as a senior adviser at the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in Brussels, Belgium.

As a member of President Bill Clinton's peace process team, Riedel negotiated at Camp David and other Arab-Israeli summits, and in January 2009, President Barack Obama asked him to chair a review of American policy toward Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Riedel will be available immediately following the ODU lecture to sign copies of his book "Avoiding Armageddon: America, India and Pakistan to the Brink and Back," which will be on sale at the event.
