Jenifer Alonzo Slated as Guest on ‘With Good Reason’ Radio Show Dec. 12

In an era of tight government funding for academic research, it is important to communicate why a particular research project matters.

However, for many scientists, the same diligent, introverted nature that makes them excellent researchers makes it difficult for them to convey their ideas verbally.

Jenifer Alonzo, assistant professor of communication and theatre arts at Old Dominion University, does not have that problem. A former introvert, she learned to express herself confidently. Her journey from introvert to extrovert can provide useful advice to other researchers. She'll speak about that on the public radio show "With Good Reason" Thursday, Dec. 12. The show airs at 1 p.m. on WHRV-FM, 89.5.

The hourlong show, produced by the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities, spotlights the achievements of Virginia public universities in scholarly research and innovation.

The National Science Foundation awarded Alonzo and several colleagues a grant to develop programs that would improve the way people from a wide variety of research fields communicate with each other. The result has been the Interdisciplinary Communication Laboratory for Undergraduate Biology, or iCLUB.

Alonzo has been in demand around the country as a guest speaker on how to teach introverted researchers how to express their ideas powerfully. She'll discuss the special acting classes she teaches to faculty on "With Good Reason."

Other guests on the show, which will air Dec. 7-13 on different markets around Virginia and in other states, include Virginia Tech marketing professor Kim Weaver, who will discuss holiday marketing and the pressure it puts on gift-givers, and Radford University management professor Danylle Kunkel, who says there are business and management lessons that can be learned from popular movies such as "Pitch Perfect" and "Ocean's Eleven."

Broadcast times in different markets are posted at: http://www.withgoodreasonradio.org/when-to-listen/.

Audio files of the full program and its companion news feature will be posted on the "With Good Reason" website. A permanent link can be found here: http://withgoodreasonradio.org/2013/12/the-art-of-giving/.

"With Good Reason" has twice won the Gabriel Award for Best Documentary/Public Affairs Program. It also is the recipient of top honors from the Virginia Association of Broadcasters and won a second-place award in the Public Radio News Directors competition.
