Symposium on Student Diversity Targets Local Teachers

Virginia Deputy Secretary of Education Javaid Siddiqi will be at Old Dominion University on Wednesday, Dec. 12, as the host of a professional development event for teachers.

Raising the Bar: A Best Practice Approach to Addressing Student Diversity will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Big Blue Room of the Ted Constant Convocation Center. The event is designed for local teachers, but anyone is welcome to register.

The program will feature nationally renowned speakers on education issues. ODU Provost Carol Simpson will give opening remarks and welcome Siddiqi to the university.

The one-day symposium will explore how to change the climate in classrooms, and raise expectations for all students, while attending to standards and addressing student learning diversity.

Participants will emerge with a framework and tools for structuring a healthy learning environment as well as specific strategies for engaging and equipping a wide range of learners. Facilitated school-level work time will provide the teachers who attend with the opportunity to plan for implementation.

For more information about the event, contact Emily Webb at Emily.Webb@governor.virginia.gov.
