F. Ludwig Diehn School of Music:Undergraduate Admission

As an undergraduate student in the F. Ludwig Diehn School of Music you have multiple major options and a music minor option, each with particular emphases.

Take time to explore these options below and see what ODU has to offer. Although ODU is large, the F. Ludwig Diehn School of Music is a small community featuring one-on-one mentoring with faculty, access to world-renowned guest artists, many performance opportunities and abundant chances to collaborate with peers. Private lessons are taught by nationally recognized faculty who are experts in their specific fields. Whether you are interested in performance, music education, music theory and composition, or sound recording technology, the F. Ludwig Diehn School of Music can help you realize your aspirations.

Academic Program Options

Application Process

Step 1: Apply to ODU

Complete and submit the ODU Application for Undergraduate Admission early.
Early application is strongly advised. Applications completed by Dec 1 receive priority consideration for merit based, academic scholarships. Admission to the F. Ludwig Diehn School of Music is selective and based on an audition. A letter of acceptance from ODU Undergraduate Admissions does not signify admission into a F. Ludwig Diehn School of Music degree program. Official notification of acceptance into any music program will come in the form of an email from the F. Ludwig Diehn School of Music notifying applicants of its admissions decision. While F. Ludwig Diehn School of Music scholarship consideration is extended to all who audition, at any time, offers to incoming, new students are typically made by the end of March.

Step 2: Apply to the F. Ludwig Diehn School of Music

A separate F. Ludwig Diehn School of Music Application is required in addition to your ODU Undergraduate Admission Application.

You do not need to be admitted to ODU Undergraduate Admissions prior to submitting your Music Application.

Prepare the following for your Music Application:

  1. Two References: Name, title institution/company information, email address, and phone number for each of the two academic references: one music reference to include your music director or private teacher, one non-music reference to include advisor, guidance counselor, community leader, etc. Ask these individuals to submit recommendation letters in support of your application. Each recommender will receive an auto-email with submission instructions.
  2. Essay: A 300-500 word essay describing your involvement in music as well as your objectives and professional aspirations.
  3. Repertoire List: Titles and composers of pieces studied intensively and considered part of your solo repertoire, including technical studies, ensemble repertoire.
  4. Artistic Resume: A brief overview of your musical background including private study, performances, ensembles, repertoire, awards, etc. You can type directly into the application or upload an existing resume. Vocalists should include a head shot or picture.
  5. Recorded Audition Video* (optional) Only uploaded video qualifies for audition; audio alone will not be considered.

*NOTE: Applicants that live within a two-hour radius from the ODU campus must complete the live audition. Those who live beyond a two-hour radius and are unable to visit the campus for a live audition may upload a recorded video audition as part of the F. Ludwig Diehn School of Music application. Scholarship consideration is prioritized to applicants who perform on-campus auditions instead of recorded auditions. Audition recordings must conform to the same audition requirements as an on-campus audition unless otherwise noted. Audition recordings are only accepted via upload through our audition portal, https://app.getacceptd.com/odmusic. DVD, CD, YouTube (or similar) submissions received by postal mail or email are not accepted and will neither be reviewed nor acted upon if received. Upload each selection as a separate recording file. Audio recordings are not acceptable; only video will be considered for audition. Recordings are reviewed only after all required F. Ludwig Diehn School of Music application materials have been received and processed.

IMPORTANT: You will receive an Application Confirmation email immediately upon successful submission of your Music Application. Email support@getacceptd.com if you do not receive a confirmation email. Applications must be successfully submitted in order to be considered.

Step 3: Track the Status of Your Application Materials

Audition dates/times are confirmed only after receipt of complete application materials. You are responsible for tracking the status of your application materials, as outlined below:
