- ABSTRACT: We focus on the mathematics and modelling of a new generation of liquid crystal displays: bistable liquid crystal displays. Bistable displays are multistable confined liquid crystal systems which support multiple stable optically contrasting equilibria in the absence of an external electric field, offering the possibility of higher optical resolution at much reduced costs. We offer two case studies: the Post Aligned Bistable Nematic Device designed by Hewlett Packard and the planar square well device, reported in a paper by Tsakonas et.al. In both cases, we use a combination of analysis, topology and numerical simulations to track the stable equilibria as a function of the model parameters, their qualitative properties, transition states connecting different equilibria and switching mechanisms. This is joint work with a large number of different collaborators whose involvement will be cited throughout the talk.
