There is also a section of political lessons which, it should be noted, reflects ideas from China's communist system.

Dictionaries and Online Tools:

In addition to a word dictionary and a character dictionary, the MDBG website also offers tools such as flashcards, quizzes, and text annotation.

This website has grammar points for learning Chinese divided into beginner, elementary, intermediate, and upper intermediate. There are also answers to some of the most frequently asked questionsabout grammar and the Chinese language, as well as links for free browser plug-ins for pinyin.

Phonemica is a project to record spoken stories in every one of the thousands of varieties of Chinese in order to preserve the cultural heritage, as well as the language that may disappear as Standard Mandarin becomes more widely spoken. Not only is the site beautiful to view, but you can also browse the stories on teh site or read the editor's selections. After the stories are recorded, they are transcribed into Chinese characters as as a Romanized version, and the International Phonetic Alphabet, and are translated into English.

The Chinese Language Center section of the Yellow Bridge site has flashcards, a Chinese memory game, and an etymology explorer. There is also information about Chinese literature and links to news stories about current events and business news stories. "Web Watch." The Language Educator November 2011: 60. Print
