The Broadening Participation in STEM-H initiative seeks to increase the number of women and underrepresented minorities pursuing educational and career opportunties in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and health sciences. ODU is the second largest producer of STEM-H degrees in Virginia. ODU's diverse student body and outstanding nationally recognized faculty in several related disciplines position the university to attract both research and intervention grants related to broadening participation in STEM-H.

Formed in spring 2016, the initiative promotes this national priority through data gathering, networking, and institutional support for STEM-H-related research and educational opportunities. The group brings faculty together to discuss partnerships, funding opportunities and learn from outside sources.

ODU Awarded $1.5 Million MARC Grant

A multidisciplinary collaboration led by two Old Dominion University professors has netted a $1.5 million Maximizing Access to Research Careers (MARC) grant, funded by the National Institutes of Health. This is the first time the University has been awarded a MARC grant.

For Alvin Holder, an associate professor of chemistry and biochemistry, and Desh Ranjan, an endowed professor in computer science, securing the prestigious award has been years in the making.

• "That None Shall Perish" was a presentation by Dr. Kelly Mack, Vice President for Undergraduate STEM Education with the Association of American Colleges and Universities, discussed the need for institutional strategies targeting broadening participation to be more reflective than prescriptive, more open- than closed-ended, and more daring than accommodating. Held in the Strome Entrepreneurial Center on Sept. 26, 2018, the event included a networking luncheon along with the presentation.
  

• "Partnerships in STEM-H Education: The Center for Educational Partnerships" was a networking luncheon and presentation on The Center for Educational Partnerships, led by Executive Director Joanna Garner. She provided an overview of TCEP's mission, faculty and staff, and existing collaborations. Dr. Garner also discussed STEM education initiatives currently underway, best practices for proposals and sponsored projects, working with school divisions, and broader impacts (based on the NSF definition.)

• "Broadening Participation in STEM: Why Aren't Our Solutions Working?" was a talk given by Dr. Karan Watson, Provost and Executive Vice President of Texas A&M University on the challenges facing those in STEM-H on March 30, 2017.

• The Broadening Participation in STEM-H luncheon on December 2, 2016 kicked off the group's activities. Held at the Strome Entreprenuerial Center, it brought together more than 40 faculty to discuss STEM-H and find partners to further work at ODU.
