The Old Dominion University English Language Center (ELC) specializes in full-time and part-time university coursework in English as a second language. The ELC offers a six-level intensive program for students who need in-depth study of English and a Bridge Program for students who are conditionally accepted by the university. Sessions begin in January, March, May, June, August, and October. We also host specially designed programs for professionals or groups of students. The ELC is a member of UCIEP and AAIEP
The English Language Center offers six 7-week sessions each year. Each week, students spend 20 hours in class studying grammar, listening/speaking, reading/vocabulary and writing.
Placement and Evaluation
There are six levels of classes. New students will be assigned to the appropriate level of difficulty based on the placement test given at the beginning of each session. Each level lasts 14 weeks and is divided into two 7-week sessions. Advancing to the next level occurs when students meet grade and attendance requirements for the level. Students receive evaluations of their progress in the middle and at the end of each session. Students are awarded a certificate upon the completion of their program.
