I was born and raised in Lancaster PA but have lived in Virginia for38 years and consider it home. I have been a special education teacher, administrator at three different alternative educational settings, and a teacher educator for some 45 years. I earned my Ph.D. at Peabody College/Vanderbilt University. Prior to joining the special education faculty at ODU, I was on the faculty of special education at Vanderbilt University and the University of Pittsburgh. I have published over 300 peer-referred journal articles, monographs, book chapters, and edited textbooks. Singly, and along with colleagues, I have secured over 56 million dollars of external funding from regional research centers, private foundations, and state and federal agencies. I have served as President of the Council for Children with Behavioral Disorders and on the Executive Board of the International Association of Special Education and Services. I received a Senior Fulbright Scholarship and taught undergraduate courses in special education at Hanoi National University of Education, Hanoi, Vietnam. I co ntinue to work closely with faculty at HNUE.Throughout my career, I have benefited from the wisdom of my colleagues and learned humility from the children and adolescents I have sought to serve.
