DSST

The DSST exams are similar to the College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) exams: individuals are able to receive college credit by taking these advanced placement exams. Visit the Admissions website for the list of accepted DSST exams.

Preparing for the Test

For each DSST exam, there is an Exam Content Fact Sheet that outlines the topics covered in that exam. The Exam Content Fact Sheet includes a list of recommended references of books that would be useful for review and a list of sample questions.

You can download individual Exam Content Fact Sheets from the DSST website.

Register for a DANTES Exam

Please register through our online registration system to schedule your test date and time.

The test administration fee is payable via AMEX, Visa, Discover, and MasterCard credit or debit card. The testing fee is non-refundable and non-transferrable.

Please note that all DANTES exam fees must be paid prior to your test date. To pay for your voucher, call 800-257-9484 and press option 9. The University Testing Center is center #9265. DANTES will accept your payment and provide you a voucher number. You must bring this voucher number with you to the Testing Center.

On Test Day

  • Make sure you have purchased your DSST exam voucher before arriving
  • Bring an appropriate official photo ID (valid state-issued ID, military ID or passport)

Computing Scores

All exam questions carry the same weight. Test takers are awarded points for correct answers only and do not lose points for incorrect answers. Instead of being penalized, they are simply not awarded the point for that question.

Receiving Your Scores

Scores are available to test takers immediately after the Internet-based exams are taken. Scores, for paper-based exams, will be mailed.

Sending Score Reports to Your Colleges

For official scores to be sent to the institution of your choice, you must provide the institution's 4-digit DSST code at the time of your examination. Note that some schools require a student to be enrolled before the institution will accept the score report. Due to privacy and security requirements, scores will not be reported over the phone under any circumstance.

Re-test Policy

DSST exams may not be retaken within a three-month period. This waiting period provides the student an opportunity to spend additional time preparing for the exam or the option of taking a classroom course. If you attempt to take the same exam title before the required wait period, your exam will be invalid and test fees will be forfeited.

Refund Policy

Individuals who fail to reschedule by the registration deadline (at least 48 hours before the scheduled appointment) or fail to show up for their appointment will need to schedule another testing appointment and repay the test administration fee. Refunds will only be issued (minus a $3.50 fee charged by RegisterBlast) if notice is given in writing (e-mail credentialingcenter@odu.edu) at least 48 hours before your appointment time.
