Creating Cybersecurity Pathways between Community Colleges & Universities

About the Project

This project implemented strategies to enhance cybersecurity pathways between three community colleges (Northern Virginia Community College, Tidewater Community College, and Virginia Peninsula Community College) and Old Dominion University. Activities included a case study, surveys and focus groups of key stakeholders, the development of a transfer fellow program, and the creation of an interinstitutional cybersecurity student association. This website includes information about the project team, recommendations for cybersecurity students offered by faculty and advisors, an overview of the case study, an introduction to the student association, and resources for improving transfer pathways for cybersecurity students.

Cyber Advising

It is important to understand that one cybersecurity student's journey will be different from another's. Cybersecurity advising is a vital resource that teaches all students the interdisciplinary framework of cybersecurity, promotes experience outside of the classroom, guides them to degree completion and teaches them the importance of lifelong learning.

ODU Tech Talent Faculty/Advisor Fellows Program

The ODU Tech Talent Faculty/Advisor Fellows Program supports community college faculty and advisors to learn more about transfer processes in high demand majors such as Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Cybersecurity, and Information Technology. This program aims to engage a broad spectrum of faculty members and faculty administrators in advancing a culture of transfer student success at their community college and enhanced collaborations with ODU as it relates to transfer pathways. The Fellows will be the main point of contact for information, programs, and transfer pathways for Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Cybersecurity, and Information Technology students. Fellows engage in the following activities:

  • Participate in faculty training,
  • Attend faculty meetings,
  • Discuss curricula and opportunities for improvement,
  • Facilitate transfer between programs,
  • Highlight success stories,
  • Educate staff/faculty at their respected community colleges,
  • Participate in a transfer summit,
  • Receive continuing education units from ODU's School of Continuing Education, and
  • Be awarded a Certificate of Completion.

Transfer experts work with Faculty fellows in areas such as increasing institutional knowledge about transfer, transfer student experience, and transfer pathways. Community college faculty and faculty administrators earn how to better work with their transfer student population and be able to provide feedback about what can be done to streamline transfer agreements.
