Director Cheryl Dunye's seminal, funny and smart THE WATERMELON WOMAN - the first feature film directed by a black lesbian, made on a budget of $300k (with about $30k of National Endowment of the Arts funding), about a video store clerk who conducts a research project on the forgotten film history of African American women and finds love in the process.

It was even mentioned (disparagingly) on the Congressional floor as "having some of the hottest sex scenes ever recorded on celluloid" by an uptight haircut named Peter Hoekstra - Can't make a movie much more #NaroMinded than that!

Recently restored by UCLA and on the summer docket for The Criterion Collection, we are thrilled to present this classic for Pride at Norfolk's historic Naro Cinema.
