Tidewater Scottish Rite Summer LEGO Group at the ODU Speech and Hearing Clinic

The ODU Speech and Hearing Clinic is offering the Tidewater Scottish Rite LEGO Group again for Summer 2024. The program is for autistic children ages 9 to 11 years. From July 15 to 26, the group will run Monday to Friday 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM. The total cost for the 10 sessions is $150. The program will be led by graduate student clinicians in the M.S. in Speech-Language Pathology Program under the supervision of Rachel Genrich, a licensed/certified speech-language pathologist and clinical faculty member in the ODU School of Speech-Language Pathology.

The program will utilize the Autism, Identity, and Me curriculum to create a safe space for the children to work on developing a positive autistic identity and self-advocacy skills through increased self-awareness as well as the Zones of Regulation curriculum to target self-regulation skills. The LEGO activities will utilize the LEGO Education Spike Essential set, which introduces children to some basic software coding skills through the accompanying iPad app. The children will be divided into dyads or triads to work collaboratively on the LEGO projects - each child with a specific role (builder, parts supplier and/or engineer). These collaborative LEGO projects will facilitate many opportunities to practice communication skills in a natural context, such as giving/following directions, problem-solving (e.g., requesting clarification, negotiating compromises), sharing opinions, etc.

If you are interested in having your child participate or would like additional information about the program, please email Ms. Rachel Genrich at rgenrich@odu.edu.
