MEDIC SOLO Disaster + Travel + Wilderness First Aid Certification Course

MEDIC SOLO Disaster + Travel + Wilderness First Aid Certification Course

Now is a great time to take care of your Wilderness First Aid (WFA) certification.  MEDIC SOLO Instructor & ODU Prof. Hill will be teaching this in Norfolk the weekend of May 15 & 16.  Extensive safety precautions far beyond CDC and WHO guidelines are strictly enacted, for zero virus transmission.  For a description of class and what the experience looks like (it's fun!), see these photos & text from a representative MEDIC SOLO class.

Hands-on learn how to save life & limb, when mired in the wilderness of an urban disaster zone, travel or rural area far from hospital, or natural area miles from an access point, during the critical minutes or hours before ambulance arrival. Blend of classroom instruction and hands-on problem-solving rescue scenario practice. Come away with actual do-it-yourself care-giving skill and confidence, and 2-year SOLO certification. Counts as WFR Recertification, too. No prerequisites.

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, numerous added safety measures include:
a) 14-days pre-course illness screening questionnaire
b) Scan of each participant's body temperature each day
c) Masks worn at all times (we'll provide masks to those who don't have)
d) 6+ feet physical distance maintained as appropriate throughout class. Best option: students register with non-social-distancing partners and practice skills on each other. Acceptable option: attend alone and bring a homemade mannequin (stuffed pants & shirt) for your patient.
e) many more safety measures listed at https://www.solowfa.com/class-safety-protocols.html

This is a 2-day class, Saturday and Sunday, 8:00am – 7:00pm each day. May 15 & 16, 2021.

Why take this class?  Accidents, destructive weather, and terrorism happen, and all-too-often members of a group are not capable of dealing with the emergency.  This leads to improper care of the patient, and endangers the entire group.  Many recreational accidents are preventable, and improper care of trauma can compound even simple injuries. Very few first aid programs actually address the issues of providing emergency care in a setting where 911 is overwhelmed or not immediately reachable.  In this course, classroom instruction and Q&A are interwoven with practical work and problem-solving exercises. Hands-on experience - a most powerful learning tool - during scenarios comprise ~50% of class.
