- The Institute for the Humanities was excited to host a screening of the award-winning documentary film, Searching for Shaniqua, which explores the politics of naming practices in the African American community. The film won the HBO Best Documentary Award at the Martha's Vineyard African American Film Festival in 2016. The film's director, Phill Branch and its producer, Eleanor Earl, attended and participated in a Q&A with the audience following the screening. Ms. Earl is an alumni of ODU's Humanities Masters' degree program. NOTABLES: 283 attendees. The event was co-sponsored with the College of Arts & Letters, Student Engagement & Enrollment Services, the Office of Intercultural Relations, the Women's Center, the Department of Women's Studies, the Department of Communications & Theatre Arts, the Graduate Program in International Studies, the ODU Alumni Association, the ODU Black Alumni Chapter, and the Institute for the Study of Race & Ethnicity.
